Character NAME: Khrall
Character PULL-POINT: After about five years of wandering around from village to village and eating people. And cows and sheep and such too, of course!
Character AGE: 7
Character ABILITIES: Aside from killing, he doesn't have much. But in terms of killing, he's pretty good at that! He has his teeth, claws, and of course poisonous spikes in his tail.
Character HISTORY:
A manticore society is not a terribly civilized thing. Ask anyone! "How civilized is a manticore society?" you might ask, to which they would cheerfully reply, "What society? Stop talking about monsters and get back to work." The fact is, despite their sentience and capacity for speech, manticores really aren't much more than hungry beasts. They're pests — but dangerous ones. The sort that require a wandering hero to save a beleaguered village from the grip of one. They wander the world, they find a nice cave or an abandoned encampment or a pleasant forest. They eat whatever comes their way, they mate, and they die. It's not an altogether complicated life. Khrall's mother may have been slightly more ambitious than other manticores, but only because she'd made sure to secure a good, warm cave for her adorable litter of furry little poisonous, spiky kittens that wasn't far from a small village. It ensured a steady supply of food for her growing children, which was more forethought than others have been known to show.

It could be argued that it was not, however, particularly insightful forethought. This argument would gain potency after the village scraped together enough coin to pay a man with a sword to end their manticore problem. He only managed to kill two of Khrall's young siblings before their mother tore him apart, but still, it was the principle of the thing.

Khrall and his remaining siblings were all for storming the village (all three of them, yes, but they were invincible!), but his mother was of slightly wiser stock, and she moved the lot of them. Another sibling met another wandering hero along the route, and there were only two of them to feed by the time they made it to their next destination. Fortunately, their next destination was within the territory an old manticore and her young daughter, who immediately took a liking to Khrall.

Now, were they any other species, this would probably be a good thing. But the fact of the matter is that female manticores are terribly intimidating, when they're not your own mother. They're much larger than the males, with longer teeth and claws, and they bristle with poisonous spikes. Many males don't survive the mating. Females dominate physically over the males, and most of them take the role to heart -- this young lady was no exception. While his mother thought it a lovely match and took to calling her his wife, Khrall feared for his life. He didn't stick around to attempt any consummation. Leaving behind one remaining sibling, his mother, and his new wife and mother-in-law, Khrall set out (escaped in the dead of night, really, but who's counting?) to play roaming manticore on his own.

Character PERSONALITY:
Khrall is a simple man manticore, with simple desires. He'd like to eat. He'd really like to eat, actually. He'd like to survive, and not be killed by some man with a sword, if at all possible. And while he's at both of those things, he wouldn't mind a bit of amusement.

These form the core of all of Khrall's motivations, and everything comes down to this. If he gets to know someone (and he's not altogether opposed to getting chummy with humans), it's either because he thinks they'll give him food, eventually be food, or be amusing. If someone decides to be manipulative and sneaky, and use a pretty formidable creature to achieve some nefarious means -- well, that's fine. He doesn't particularly care who thinks they're outsmarting him, as long as he gets those three basics out of it sooner or later.

Khrall doesn't hold grudges. There's no use in it! Humans are fickle things, and the one that only yesterday was driving you out of town, might later be convinced to fork over lunch. (Or, yes, be lunch.) Now, if you were mad at that particular human for yesterday, then you wouldn't be likely to win food today, would you? He tends to come across as jovial and good-tempered, and he's nearly always smiling. That part may actually be a little unsettling, what with the wide mouth of needle-teeth he has going on. But, again, he doesn't mind! It's not as though he's actually looking to be anyone's friend. Khrall is a drifter through and through, never staying anywhere too long, and never knowing anyone too long. You never know when some hero-with-a-sword will come by to clear you out, if you make a habit of anything.

He'll happily say exactly what's on his mind, and has little concept of secrets. Life is simple! Who would want to go around making it complicated? If he's unhappy, expect good-natured whining. If he's pleased, you'll know. If he's peeved, oh, you'll know. You might also want to stay out of range. But anger never stays around too long, if only because it does so little good. If there's something wrong in your life, you just find a way to fix it and move on. And, yeah, usually fixing problems involves eating people, but hey! No objections to fulfilling one of those Big Three Wants while he's at it.

Chosen WEAPON: Claw sheaths! I have no idea how those will evolve, but they'll be lovely golden things that fit over his claws to strengthen and lengthen them, and he can paint them all sorts of lovely colors. Or at least get someone else to.
Chosen SKILLSET: He's a fighter!

First PERSON: [ VIDEO ]
[ Big yellow eyes! Tiny slitted pupils! Right in the video feed! And glimpses of a seriously wide mouth filled with seriously sharp needle teeth, as an exaggeratedly loud and slow voice comes through. ]

Hello! They said I can speak with humans through this thing! You all are talking to each other, I've seen it, so it must be true!

[ The speaker finally sits back, and... would be a large red lion, if not for that kind of creepy people-face.

Can I arrange dinner with one of you? [ A beat, and he adds quickly: ] I don't mean I'll eat one of you! I mean, unless anyone is volunteering. Why, in that case I'd be happy to help! But if not, I'll also accept a large cow.

[ expectant... smile... ]
Third PERSON:
He knew that if he hurried, and if he traveled a good distance of his escape in the river, he might have a shot at it. His mother wouldn't sniff out his escape route, and Darjeel wouldn't find him and drag him back. Oh, Darjeel. He shivered at the thought of her. She was almost full-grown, which made her nearly twice as large as Khrall. In a physical contest, she would easily overpower him. And the thought of that sent him to splashing more quickly through the shallow water.

It wasn't as though he expected protection from his mother, not truly. When it came to humans and their swords, well, that was her job. But against a potential mate? She was doing a very fine job of pushing him closer to death, and Khrall couldn't even resent her for it. He knew he ought to consider himself lucky to find a potential mate so young. Only two, and not yet even moved out of his mother's den! Oh, yes, very impressive. But if it was all the same to everyone, Khrall would much rather go and see a thing or two before he surrendered himself to that particular fate.

So he ran on, eventually leaving the water and padding up the bank of the river on quiet feet. There was a barn, just ahead. He'd seen one or two of those in the distance, and he'd learned from his mother that very tasty animals were often kept inside. He might even meet a farmer on the way there. Oh, this was already much better than sitting about and watching Darjeel sharpen her spines.

Grinning to himself, Khrall trotted forward, to dinner, or amusement, or both.
